Joe Kirkland, the Bulldogs’ senior staff ace entering the 2011 season, signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and play baseball for Baylor University. West senior Tyler Widiker made Mustangs history by signing with Henderson State University. Kirkland made his official visit to Baylor earlier in November, selecting the Bears instead of the University of Houston, Vanderbilt and Auburn among others. Baylor was 36-24 this past spring and caught fire in the postseason advancing to the Fort Worth Regional championship game. “I really liked the experience I had up there with the players,” said Kirkland, who will receive a partial athletic scholarship. “It was a very team-oriented atmosphere. The coaches are great. The facilities are very nice.” Kirkland was one of six players to sign with Baylor during the early signing period, a list that includes Port Neches-Groves pitcher Austin Stone, against whom Kirkland pitched in the playoffs last season. Kirkland was 6-2 with a 1.62 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings pitched as a junior for the Bulldogs, also batting .373 with 16 RBI. That performance earned him a spot on the All-District 17-4A second team and the Houston Area Baseball Junior All-Star Team. The Bulldogs finished 25-10 in 2010 and repeated as area champions. Kirkland played with infielder Brett Thornell on that team and said he looks forward to facing him at Texas A&M. As for 2011, Kirkland aims for similar success in his senior year. “We have a good staff coming back,” Kirkland said. “We’ve been working hard all year. We’re going to go as far as we can. I have a lot of faith that we’ll keep going and go to state.”
